Special participant M4DW: a tree!
It is rather normal for participants of M4Dw to dress up for the last day of walking. But this year someone will dress up all days: the director of Arboretum Marbella will walk the 30 km routes dressed as a tree. His goal is to raise money to build the Domo Confianza, a place to meet for events and courses, in the park the NGO takes care of. People can sponsor his steps, with 150.000 steps will raise the 30.000€ needed.
Since the first edition of M4DW both organisations work together. At the end of the event the organisation passes the details about the amount of paper and petrol used for the event to Arboretum for a calculation of the CO2 that has been generated and the amount of trees that have to be planted to compensate. Apart from that the participants of M4DW can donate 10€ to an NGO of their choice, Arboretum is one of them. “When Alejandro came to us with the idea to walk dressed as a tree in order to raise money we immediately liked it” says Hans Wohl, organizer of M4DW. “We’ve seen the suit, it is definitely going to be heavy but it is fantastic to see that people are willing to do these kind of things to make a dream come true.”
The slogan of Arboretum is that if it isn’t fun it can’t be sustainable. That is why they thought of doing something special to raise money for the Domo Confianza (dome of trust). Director Alejandro César Orioli will participate in Marbella 4Days Walking. He will walk the 30km routes, a total of 150.000 steps. The public will pay him for the steps he takes (0,20€) so at least 30.000€ will be raised. The campaign is called ‘paso a paso x un sueño’ (step by step to make a dream come true). The fun part in all this is that he will walk dressed as a tree in a suit that weighs 16 kilos and has an height of 2.60mtr. “We wanted something special and this idea came up. I’ve started training already because it is going to be heavy to walk 30kms a day but the Dome is most certainly worth it” says Alejandro.
The Domo Confianza is being build according to the principles of bioconstruction, with local and natural materials. The total costs for the 140m2 building are 72.000€, half of the costs of conventional buildings. A team of 16 professionals will work two months on building the Dome, at the beginning of next year the building will be finished.
